Glad you enjoyed the read. Thank you for your opinions.
Stay tuned, much more to come.

steve hodel
los angeles
----- Original Message -----
From: Patrick Grilli
To: steve@blackdahliaavenger.com
Sent: Saturday, January 08, 2005 7:30 AM

Hi Steve ! I just read your book in a very good French translation by Robert Pépin (the publisher is Le Seuil) I know what to say but I don't know how to say it. First: it's a very good book from the literary viewpoint; you are a true contender to James Ellroy. So, congratulations ! Second: I will never ever say "yes, George Hodel" should be sent to the electric chair on the basis of your book. For the following reasons: 1) the photographs in your father's private collection of snapshots - I mean, the ones with the eyes shut - are clearly NOT pictures of Elizabeth Short who had a face that was so mannish with a very strong chin and jaws that she looked like Jack Dempsey ! while the photos in your father's collection look like Anais Nin, that's to say a very feminine and gracious face of a little woman 2) the perfect way in which the body of the Black Dahlia was cut in two pieces could have been done by a surgeon, that's true, BUT ALSO by a hunter or a butcher (I've just heard a woman criminologist on French television saying so about the beheading of a victim): moreover: can I ask you one question ? Is there in the whole world and in the whole history of mankind one surgeon who ever cut a body in two exact pieces ? I mean: this is not even necessary for a post mortem examination, and if a surgeon - and more particularly the surgeons you talked to - never did such a bizarre operation, how then can they tell that this was the work done by a surgeon ? 3) there is of course a patent contradiction between your assertion that your father was a genius à la Albert Einstein and the message "If I get only 10 years in jail, I'm ready to surrender" - do you really think that a doctor - someone who studied 10 years at university - could have written such a stupid message ? Then you say that your father was still a child emotionnally and psychologically: I don't think that makes sense: a doctor, a phd, could NOT have written such a naive message, fullstop 4) you say it yourself: the word "Avenger" in Black Dahlia Avenger has two meanings (to take vengeance on someone OR on account of someone) and I must tell you that, personnally, when I read the words "Black Dahlia Avenger" , my understanding is that it is someone who wants to take vengeance on account of the Black Dahlia, that's to say who wants to punish the murderer of the Black Dahlia (and I can even tell you that if I was in charge, I would have investigated the possibility that Armand Robles was the murderer (because he did not look Spanish, he WAS spanish, and I'm sorry to tell but latin people can be very violent) 5) for me, graphology is just bullshit and should be forbidden; I mean a) companies should not have the right to make a graphology study about someone solliciting for a job b) courts, judges or lawyers should not have the right to use graphology as evidence. 6) for me, your comments about Man Ray having inspired your father or about John Huston or Henry Miller have participated in sex parties organised by your father are just fascist crap and you should be ashamed of having made such comments: these three people are great artists and America, and the world, should be proud of them (sex has always been and always will be an artistic subject, just like like death or illness or madness or love) 7) you're really exaggerating when you accuse your father or his friend Fred Sexton of having committed not only the Black Dahlia and the lipstick murder but also all unsolved murders in the 40ies and the 50ies. I give you an example: in my country, Belgium, we thought that all child molestation crimes had been committed by only one man: Marc Dutroux BUT we soon had to make acquaintance with two other horrid murderers: Patrick Derochette and Daniel Fourniret.

My conclusion: your book is about women. Women behaving "badly" get killed. Men behaving just in the same way are "real men" who are behaving normally. Your book is about emancipation of women in LA just after the second world war. It's also a book about incest and paedophilia that in your case like in most cases very unfortunately happen within and NOT outside the family circle.

Thank you, I had a great time reading your book.

Patrick
